A Farewell with Love: Texas Roadhouse Honors a Dog’s Final Meal

In a world often marked by hustle and indifference, a small act of kindness from a local Texas Roadhouse restaurant in Ephrata, Pennsylvania, has reminded us all of the enduring power of love and compassion.

On April 19, Hunter Metzger faced one of the hardest decisions a pet owner can make — saying goodbye to his beloved Great Dane, Iris. Eight years old and nearly 120 pounds, Iris had always been a gentle giant, full of character and warmth. But when she began experiencing severe breathing issues, what was first thought to be a treatable infection turned out to be a tumor in her nose. With no improvement despite medical efforts, Hunter made the painful but humane choice to euthanize her.

On her final day, Iris was surrounded by family and friends. She received cuddles, treats, and all the affection a loyal companion could ever hope for. But Hunter wanted to do something more — something that expressed his love in a tangible, memorable way. He decided to give Iris one last, special dinner.

For Iris’s final dinner, Hunter carefully ordered her favorite comfort foods from Texas Roadhouse: a juicy New York strip steak, golden steak fries, fluffy mashed potatoes, and soft, oven-fresh bread — a heartfelt tribute in every bite. In the “special request” field, he wrote: “Last meal for our dog. Please prepare with love.”

That simple message reached Kate Weston, the kitchen manager at the restaurant. An animal lover herself, Kate immediately understood the emotional weight behind the request. She and her team went above and beyond to make the meal with care and heart. They cooked it to perfection, handwrote a message of condolence, and marked the takeout container with the words “Made with LOVE.”

When Hunter arrived to pick up the meal, two staff members personally came to the window to offer their condolences. The kindness didn’t end there. The next morning, Hunter discovered that Texas Roadhouse had quietly refunded the cost of the entire order.

What started as a heartfelt goodbye turned into a story that resonated across social media, as Hunter shared his experience with a local community group. Thousands responded, moved by the restaurant’s sincere gesture and the deep love between a man and his dog.

Texas Roadhouse later said in a statement, “While it was a simple act, we hope it brought a moment of comfort during a difficult time. We believe in treating our guests like family.”

In choosing empathy over indifference, and love over routine, the Texas Roadhouse team showed how even a small act can make a world of difference. As Kate Weston put it best:
“The world feels heavy right now. But love and compassion can turn someone’s worst day into something they’ll never forget.”

In the end, Iris’s final meal wasn’t just about food — it was about dignity, memory, and love. The kind of love that lasts long after goodbye.
