Bangladeshi Actor Kazi Toufikul Islam Emon represents Nation at Turkish Theatre Residency

Kazi Toufikul Islam Emon, a renowned Bangladeshi theater artist, recently accomplished “The Childhood Project,” an international theater residency held in Diyarbakir, Turkey, from May 11 to May 30.

This prestigious initiative, spearheaded by Sweden’s Unga Klara Theatre Company with support from the Swedish government, convened 22 artists representing 11 countries to collaboratively develop the new play, “The Guardians of the Gods.”

Emon, an accomplished actor and advisor with Prachyanat, proudly served as the sole representative from the Asian continent. His role in the residency was dual-faceted, encompassing both a performance in the production and his capacity as a national representative for Bangladesh. Regrettably, two other talented Bangladeshi artists, Nahida Ankhi and Diana Merlin, who were initially chosen to participate, were unable to join due to unforeseen visa complications.

In the final staging of “The Guardians of the Gods,” Emon delivered a pivotal performance alongside Canadian actor Deana, effectively maintaining Bangladesh’s crucial presence within the international collaborative process.

Reflecting on his experience, Emon expressed profound appreciation for the opportunity. “It was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of such a residency—collaborating with theatre artists from across the world, exchanging ideas, and mounting together,” he stated.

He further lauded the play’s director, Gustav Deinoff, describing him as “a brilliant and modern visionary.” Emon emphasized the inspiring nature of such production-based placements, stating, “A production-based residency like this not only strengthens your dexterity but also inspires you to push more and keep creating.”

“The Guardians of the Gods” delves into the complexities of childhood through the narrative of two shape shifting characters, A and B, who undergo magical transformations. The play, brought to life by adult actors voicing these characters, thoughtfully examines how children navigate themes of power and identity within an adult-dominated world. Designed as a cross-cultural production, the play is set to be staged in various countries, utilizing the same script, which will be translated and adapted to suit local contexts.

Upon his return to Dhaka, Emon has articulated plans to mentor fellow Bangladeshi theatre artists, including Nahida and Diana, in preparation for future stagings of “The Guardians of the Gods,” ensuring the continued presence of this international collaboration on Bangladeshi stages.
