Pop singer and former American Idol constant Benson Boone has made a bold return to the spotlight with the release of his second studio album. American Heart, which dropped Friday. Alongside the album came the music video for its fourth single “Mr. Electric Blue,” a cleverly comedic take on fame, criticism, and self-image.
Boone, 22, who garnered attention earlier this year after a show-stealing backflip at the Grammy Awards in a dazzling blue sequined jumpsuit, leans fully into satire in the new video. Opening with the singer wearing a shirt that reads ‘One Hit Wonder,” the video follows Boone as he’s bad to the office of an over-the-top agent portrayed by longtime collaborator Jack LaFrantz, who bluntly informs him that prior investments in a gimmicky brand and a quirky ice cream venture have flopped.
As the fictional agent suggests the need for a “new gimmick,” the tongue-in-cheek dialogue escalates, with Boone humorously admitting he can’t deliver “good songwriting,” what follows is a montage of the singer taking on odd jobs in an effort to repay a fictional $10 million dept to his label.
Throughout the video, Boone is seen doing everything from dog walking and lawn mowing to hawking discount jumpsuits, all while wearing shirts labeled with words like “Inauthentic” and “100% Artificial.” The clip also features playful jabs at internet commentary, including a scene where children openly mock Boone’s music and a bumper sticker that reads, “Mustaches are lame.”
The visual concludes with Boone, now working as a pool boy, stumbling upon a sign that reads “No Backflips Allowed” — a fitting punch line that ties back to his Grammy stunt and frames the entire narrative as a lighthearted nod to public scrutiny.
With its vintage musical feel and comic flair, “Mr. Electric Blue” highlights Boone’s growing confidence as both an artist and performer willing to laugh at him. The video and album together mark a creative step forward, blending pop charm with a sharp sense of humor.
