China Renews Climate Commitment, Urges Global Unity

In a strong reaffirmation of China’s dedication to environmental stewardship, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged all nations to intensify collective efforts to tackle climate change. His remarks came during a joint press conference with Kiribati’s President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau, following the conclusion of the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Xiamen City.

Wang emphasized the urgency of united global action, highlighting the shared responsibility of all nations—developed and developing alike—in addressing the escalating threats of climate change. He described the issue as a “common challenge to humanity” and stressed the importance of multilateral cooperation and solidarity.

Expressing deep regret over recent international developments, Wang criticized the withdrawal of several influential countries from the Paris Agreement, the landmark global accord adopted in 2015 to limit global warming. He made particular reference to the United States, noting that President Donald Trump had signed an executive order to exit the agreement on his first day in office during his second term. Wang described such decisions as setbacks for global environmental efforts and warned that climate inaction by powerful nations undermines global momentum.

Despite these obstacles, Wang reiterated that China remains firmly committed to its environmental obligations. “No matter how the international landscape evolves, China’s position on climate change will not waver,” he stated. He further pledged that China will continue to play a constructive and proactive role in global climate governance, and will persist in advancing South-South cooperation—a framework through which developing countries support each other in areas such as technology, funding, and capacity-building.

Looking ahead, Wang announced an ambitious new initiative aimed at deepening cooperation with Pacific Island countries in the fields of climate change mitigation and sustainable development. He emphasized the importance of supporting small island nations that are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation.

To bring this initiative to fruition, China plans to carry out 100 “small and beautiful” climate-oriented projects throughout Pacific Island nations over the next three years. These efforts will concentrate on practical, community-level interventions such as renewable energy systems, climate-resilient infrastructure, and sustainable agricultural techniques. According to Wang, the aim is to strengthen local capacities, boost climate resilience, and foster environmentally sustainable development tailored to the unique needs of island communities.

The minister further emphasized China’s continued dedication to assisting Pacific Island countries through financial assistance, technical expertise, and knowledge exchange—highlighting Beijing’s growing strategic and diplomatic involvement in the region.

Wang concluded by underscoring that climate change remains one of the most critical challenges facing humanity. “Addressing it demands not only resolve, but also true collaboration and consistent action,” he stated. “China is committed to working hand in hand with the global community to safeguard our planet for future generations.”
