In a significant move towards transforming urban mobility and combating air pollution, the Government of Bangladesh is preparing to introduce electric buses in the capital city Dhaka and the nearby industrial hub, Narayanganj. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, involves a proposed investment of around BDT 2,500 crore (approximately USD 215 million), with plans to deploy 400 battery-powered buses and establish three state-of-the-art charging depots.
This project is a part of a broader strategy aimed at developing a sustainable, environmentally friendly public transport system. The electric buses will be strategically operated within Dhaka and Narayanganj—two of the most densely populated and traffic-congested cities in the country.
Smart Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future
To support this eco-conscious initiative, three charging stations will be constructed in key locations: Purbachal, Kanchpur, and Jhilmil. These depots will not only serve as charging hubs but also facilitate maintenance and fleet management operations to ensure efficiency and reliability in the long run.
The World Bank has agreed to finance the lion’s share of the project, contributing BDT 2,135 crore, while the remaining BDT 365 crore will be funded by the Bangladesh government. The implementation and coordination will be overseen by the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), with the project timeline set between 2025 and 2030.

One of the core objectives is to reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector, which has long been identified as a major contributor to Dhaka’s poor air quality.
