The University of Dhaka, widely known for its excellence over the century, celebrated its 105th founding anniversary today with a series of events. There has been enthusiastic participation from students, faculty, alumni, and staff.
With the demands for establishing a university in Dhaka from various quarters in then Bengal, Dhaka University was born on July 1 in 1921. After beginning the journey in 2021, alongside providing standard higher education, the Dhaka University has played remarkable role in lifting socio-political condition of the Bengali people. It has contributed to every democratic movements that took place over the decades. The university has also acted as pioneer in cultural movements through its distinguished faculty members and students.
This year the university has organized its birth anniversary based on the theme “Dhaka University in Building an Inclusive and Equitable Society’’.
Celebration began at 9:30 AM when teachers, students, officials, and staff from various halls and hostels gathered at Smriti Chirantan Square. A grand rally, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Niaz Ahmad Khan, was brought, parading across the campus in a festive spirit.
At 10:00 AM, a formal opening ceremony took place in front of the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC). The national flag, along with the university and hall flags, was hoisted, followed by a ceremonial cake cutting. The Department of Music presented the national anthem and patriotic songs, with additional performances by international students.
The main discussion session was held at 10:30 AM at the TSC auditorium. Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Dr. S.M.A. Faiz delivered a keynote address. Vice-Chancellor Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan presided over the event. Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Sayma Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, and Treasurer Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury joined the event as special guests.
A commemorative souvenir marking the university’s 105th anniversary was also unveiled during the discussion.
The day-long celebration reflected the university’s enduring commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity, and nation-building.
