The government plan to construct the nation’s longest bridge, linking the island district of Bhola with Barisal, with an estimated cost of 17 Crore.
Currently the longest bridge in Bangladesh, the Padma Multipurpose Bridge spans 6.15km and was constructed at a cost of $3.6 billion. It links Louhajang Upazila of Munshiganj with Zazira Upazila of Shariatpur, and includes a small portion in Shibchar Upazila of Madaripur. The bridge opened on June 26, 2022.
The bridge division reports that the Japanese firm Miyagawa Construction Ltd is very interested in building the roughly 11 kilometer bridge.
Md Azad Jahan, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bhola District, told BSS that there’s a chance the bridge construction could begin while the interim government is in power.
He also stated that Japan has expressed a strong interest in beginning the bridge’s construction.
During a recent visit to Bhola district, Sheikh Moinuddin, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, emphasized the significance of the Bhola-Barisal Bridge.
He also mentioned that this bridge would be the longest in the country and rank among the largest globally upon completion, with a projected start date for construction around January.
