Milestone for Chattogram: Foundation Laid for Kalurghat Rail and Road Bridge over Karnaphuli River

Chattogram has taken a significant step forward in infrastructure development with the official commencement of the much-anticipated Kalurghat rail and road bridge construction over the Karnaphuli River. This landmark project promises to transform the communication network in southern Chattogram and improve the daily lives of thousands.

On Wednesday, May 14, Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus unveiled the foundation plaque at a formal ceremony held at the Chattogram Circuit House. This marks his first official visit to Chattogram after assuming the role of Chief Adviser.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Yunus reflected on the deep personal and historical significance of Kalurghat, saying, “I have many memories associated with Kalurghat Bridge. Its historical value is immense. This new bridge will fulfill a long-standing dream of the people of Chattogram and significantly reduce their daily struggles.”

In a notable move, the foundation plaque does not carry the name of any individual. Instead, it simply mentions the project title—construction of the rail and road bridge over the Karnaphuli River at Kalurghat—and the implementing agency, Bangladesh Railway. This decision, directed by the Office of the Chief Adviser, highlights a growing trend in government projects to prioritize national interest and institutional recognition over personal accolades.

According to Mohammad Subaktagin, General Manager of Bangladesh Railway (East Zone), “We followed instructions not to include any individual names on the plaque. This sets a remarkable and praiseworthy precedent in the country’s project implementation history.”

Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan noted that the current Kalurghat Bridge, built in 1931, has long exceeded its expected lifespan. “People of southern Chattogram have been demanding a new bridge over the Karnaphuli River for decades. The commencement of this project brings immense joy and hope to the residents of Boalkhali and the surrounding regions,” he said.

The new bridge is expected to be completed by 2029 and become fully operational by 2030. It will not only facilitate smoother transportation between Chattogram city and its southern areas but also boost trade, mobility, and socio-economic development.

As part of a broader national strategy, this project reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development, where the benefits of modernization reach even the remotest parts of the country. With the construction of the Kalurghat rail and road bridge, Chattogram is poised to witness enhanced connectivity, greater investment potential, and improved quality of life for its residents.

The Kalurghat bridge project stands as a symbol of progress, transparency, and forward-thinking leadership. It adds yet another proud chapter to Chattogram’s ongoing journey toward becoming a hub of modern infrastructure and sustainable growth.
