The Bangladesh Cricket Broad (BCB) has announced Mehedi hasan Miraz as the new captain of the One Day International (ODI) team, a pivotal decision made just before the squad’s imminent departure for Sri Lanka.
Miraz addressed the media at a press conference in Mirpur on Friday, June 13, fielding various questions regarding his new role and the team’s preparations. When asked about handling potential criticism in the event of poor performance, the all-rounder displayed a pragmatic outlook. “Journalists don’t just criticize. They also praise,” Miraz stated. “We also get into different situations on the field of play. We have to come out of them. So as a captain, we always have to have the mentality to accept all situations.”
Queries also arose regarding the timing and process of his appointment, specifically concerning the absence of a broad meeting. Miraz clarified, “I don’t know anything about this, how the board made the decision. As far as I know, the decision is made through the board meeting. No one can take it alone. Sometimes situations happen. We all always prepare ourselves mentally for that.”
The appointment marks a significant moment for the 26-year-old Miraz. He brings considerable experience to the leadership role. In his ODI career, he has played 105 matches, with the bat, he has accumulated 1617 runs in 76 innings, boasting a highest score an unbeaten 112* and a batting average of approximately 24.87. He has recorded 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries.
As a bowler, Miraz has been equally impactful, taking 110 wickets in 102 innings. His best bowling figures stand at 4/25, with a bowling average around 36.91 and an economy rate of approximately 4.83. He has claimed five four-wicket hauls in his career and has also secured 41 catches.
The team is set to depart for Sri Lanka shortly, with Miraz at the team, as they embark on their next international assignment under his new leadership.
