“Toddler to Teen: Elite Parents Rising Capable Kids!”

Getting children involved in household chores early in life can be a great way to help them grow into confident, capable and happy adults. Research shows that kids who help out at home tend to do better later in life. But many parents aren’t sure what chores are right for which age. The technique is starting with small and build up gradually.

You can begin teaching responsibility as early as age 2. Toddlers can handle simple tasks like putting toys in a basket or giving an item to someone when asked. For instance, you can say, “Take this to your dad,” or “Put your toy back in the box.” These little jobs help them feel involved and valued.

Jakia Sultana, a child development expert, explains that small tasks help kids make decisions and become more independent. Asking them what they’d like to wear or what they want to eat encourages thinking and problem solving. Even saying, “Tell me a story today,” instead of always reading to them can boost creativity and confidence.

Jakia also points out that many parents unintentionally discourage their children by saying, “You can’t do that, let me help.” Instead, give your child a chance to try. If something seems unsafe, explain the reason and offer a safer alternative.

Chores by Age

As children grow, so do their abilities. The goal isn’t to burden them but to teach them life skills in a fun, age-appropriate way.

Age Group between 2 to 3:

  • Put toys away after playtime
  • Let them help you to keep fruits or vegetables while you’re storing them
  • Try to dress themselves (with help)

Age Group between 4 to 5:

  • Help make their bed
  • Feed or bathe a pet with supervision
  • Eat independently
  • Throw trash in the bin
  • Help water plants with a small cup

Age Group between 6 to 8:

  • Wipe surfaces with a cloth or wet tissue
  • Let them put dirty clothes in the laundry basket
  • Keep their bed and play area tidy
  • Bring items like a glass of water when asked

Age Group between 9 to 10:

  • Wash their plate after meals
  • Organize books and clothes
  • Pack their school bag or lunchbox
  • Make small decisions about daily routines

Age  Group 10 and Up:

  • Help with grocery shopping
  • Fold laundry and put it away
  • Water plants and care for pets
  • Do light cooking or chop salad
  • Set and clear the dining table

Tips for Parents

  • Give clear and simple instructions
  • Don’t keep changing the rules
  • Praise their effort like clap, smile or offer a small reward
  • Don’t scold if they make mistakes, encourage them to try again
  • Let them see you doing chores too, they learn by watching
  • Even If You Have Help, Let Them Help Too

Having a nanny or house help doesn’t mean your child should skip chores. These tasks are about life skills not just cleaning. Doing chores together can also strengthen your bond with your child.

Dr. Habib Abdullah, a child psychologist says, “When parents do everything for their kids, they’re not helping; they’re actually holding them back. Let your child learn, explore and take responsibility. That’s how they grow into confident, happy people.”

Doing chores helps kids learn important life skills and feel proud of themselves. When parents give small tasks and lots of encouragement, children grow more confident and responsible. So start early, keep it fun and let your child be a helpful part of the family it’s a great way to help them grow!
