The seven government colleges, formerly affiliated institutions of Dhaka University, will be administered by the University Grants Commission until a separate administrative body is formed. The unified structure of the UGC will supervise the seven colleges and act as an interim arrangement before fully establishing a new university.
UGC member Mohammad Tanzimuddin confirmed that Prof. AKM Elias, recently retired principal of Dhaka College, will be assigned as the administrator for the interim arrangement, as The Daily Star reported.
He also stated that the new administrator was appointed on a contractual basis.
A circular signed by its Deputy Secretary ASM Mahfuzul Alam of the Ministry of Public Administration has shown Prof. Elias as the principal of Dhaka College on a contractual basis for two years, which will be effective immediately. The interim administration’s headquarters would be centered at Dhaka College. A circular regarding the appointment will be issued by the Ministry of Public Administration soon.
These seven colleges were under the supervision of the Dhaka University administration before the student protests demanding a separate university a couple of months ago. The government conceded to the students’ demand, establishing “Dhaka Central University” to bring these seven colleges under a single institutional framework. However, the establishment of the new university requires parliamentary approval, infrastructure development, and governmental preparations. Before all preparations are completely done, the seven colleges will be supervised by the UGC during the interim period.
