THE UK Government is going to introduce “Consults”, an AI designed tool to expedite public consultations. “Consults” can review public responses quickly. This tool was first used by the Swedish government for public consultations service. In the first experimental period, the efficiency of this tool has been proven as it provided accurate results. It is hundreds times faster and can save millions of money of the government.
According to The Guardian , the UK government stated that the tool was able to analyze consultation responses and generate results identical to those produced by human officials. It will now be used to review responses from future consultations and will continue to be developed further. In reviewing over 2,000 submissions, Consult identified key themes, which were subsequently reviewed and refined by experts within the Scottish government.
Michael Rovatsos, a professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics, told The Guardian that while the rewards of Consult could be significant, the risks of bias influencing the AI should not be overlooked.
While Consult is still in its trial phase and no specific launch date has been set, it is believed the tool could be rolled out in government offices by the end of 2025.
