Despite losing one of its wheels immediately after flying off from Cox’s Bazar, a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight attempted to land comfortably at Hazrat Shahjalal Airport in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.
Biman’s GM of public relation, ABM Rawshan Kabir, indicated that the incident happened right after flight BG 436 departed Cox’s Bazar Airport at 2.19 pm, while it was on its way to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
Rawshan reported that the aircraft was carrying 71 passengers.
He further noted that Biman’s engineering department and the airport authorities in Dhaka had taken all necessary protections for the landing of the aircraft, which was missing a left wheel on its main landing gear, and confirmed that both passengers and the aircraft were safe.
In addition, he said that the flight arrived safely at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 2.20 pm.
Biman has stated that their engineering division will investigate the reason why the wheel detached during the flight. To further understand the situation, they have also created a four member investigate team.
Rawshan mentioned that a committee, led by Capt Enamul Haque Talukder, who is the chief of flight safety at Biman, has been formed and is expected to deliver its report within 15 working days.
Furthermore, a senior pilot at Biman explained that a Dash 8-400 aircraft is configured with six wheels: two at the front and two on each side as part of the main arrival gear.
“Capt, Jamil Billah, the pilot in command of the flight, made the right decision via landing at the Dhaka airport, where the emergency and safety facilities are the best compared to Chattogram or other airports.” he stated, choosing to stay anonymous, after the Cox’s Bazar Air Traffic control alerted him about the loss of a wheel.
He indicated that the pilot might face increased difficulty if the left wheel was damaged.
The senior pilot indicated that these types of incidents are a normal part of aviation, and the flight’s pilot in command was able to accurately assess the situation and ensure a safe landing.
Biman authorities also stated that the aircraft has been moved to a hanger where the airline’s engineering staff has begun their investigation into the cause of the wheel loss.
